Switzerland is where the white-backed woodpecker calls home

Donnerstag, 5. April 2001
Sempach (LU) – Scientists have finally confirmed that the white-backed woodpecker is indigenous to Switzerland. The bird is one of the best indicators of biological diversity in Swiss mountain forests.
The white-backed woodpecker seems to feel most comfortable in eastern Switzerland, often breeding there. Yet, it is a very difficult bird to observe in the wild due to its shyness and well-hidden nesting areas. However, the easiest time to catch a glimpse of the woodpecker is during its mating season, throughout March and April.
